Before you apply Where a New Zealand citizen or a person who ordinarily resides in New Zealand gets divorced or dissolves their relationship outside of New Zealand, a dissolution or divorce certificate can be deposited with Births, Deaths and Marriages. This will be used to update the marriage or civil union registration. How to apply To deposit a divorce or dissolution certificate issued outside New Zealand, you must provide an original dissolution certificate. This certificate will be kept by Births, Deaths and Marriages. If the certificate is not written in English, you need to provide an English translation from an approved organisation. To find a translation service, you can: • Contact the Department of Internal Affairs Translation Service at www.dia.govt.nz • Check the New Zealand Yellow pages under Interpreters and Translators at www.yellow.co.nz • Contact an overseas New Zealand Consulate or High Commission office, which may be able to provide a list of translation services for their location.
