Reporting changes when you’re getting a benefit

If you get a payment from Work and Income, you must tell them if your situation or details change. This helps make sure you get the right payment.

Why you need to report changes

Changes to your circumstances or personal information may affect:

  • what you qualify for
  • how much you get paid.

If you fail to inform Work and Income, your benefit may be reduced or stopped.

If you’ve been paid too much, you’ll have to pay that money back.

What counts as a change

Examples of changes you need to tell Work and Income about include:

  • your income — if you start work, your pay changes or you start getting money from somewhere else
  • your family — if a child starts or stop being in your care, or if you start or end a relationship
  • your details — if your address, phone number or email change, or you change banks or account number
  • travelling overseas — if you’re leaving NZ, even for a short time
  • hospital or care — if you or someone in your family is admitted to hospital or care facility
  • study — if you start or stop studying
  • tax code — if you’re getting NZ Super or Veteran’s pension.

There are other changes that could affect your payments. If you’re not sure, check with Work and Income.
