Protecting your privacy
Privacy is built into the Govt.nz app from the start — it is independently overseen, aligned with New Zealand’s privacy law, and designed to keep you in control of your information.
Independent privacy impact assessment
As part of Digital Identity Services Trust Framework (DISTF) accreditation, an independent privacy evaluation of the app has been completed. These evaluations will continue on a regular basis.
Aligned with the Privacy Act
A strong privacy-preserving approach underpins the app’s development. This is in line with the principles in the Privacy Act , including:
- only collecting information when necessary
- informing you when information is collected
- not keeping information for longer than necessary
- not using information for anything other than its intended purpose
- not disclosing information without appropriate permission
- protecting the information provided.
No tracking
The government does not track you, your activity or your location in the app. You’re in control – location preferences, notifications, adding or sharing information from a digital credential is all opt-in and nothing happens until you switch it on or share it.
